Getting started

Creating a database

When you start B-Folders for the first time, there is no database and a New Database dialog is displayed. You will need to provide a strong password (combinations of words, numbers and symbols are best) and most importantly – make sure you remember the password. B-Folders cannot recover lost passwords – without it, all your data will be permanently lost. After the database has been created, you will see three vertical panes on the main application window.

The main application window

The main application window displays panes and views. The three vertical panes are used for browsing, viewing and editing items. They are displayed in a fixed layout, but can be resized using the vertical splitters between them. Different views are available for different purposes, like searching and syncing. Views can be hidden, visible, minimized or maximized. You can also change the viewing area of the main window.

Locking and unlocking the database

Your database will be automatically locked after a period of inactivity. To manually lock your database, select Options and in the drop down menu, select Lock. You can control the amount of time before auto locking by making a different selection in the Unlock database dialog box.

You will be required to unlock the database whenever you open B-Folders to access your data by entering the password into the dialog box.

NOTE TO USERS OF WINDOWS 7: The “Live Taskbar Preview” feature allows you to see a preview “screenshot” of its open windows. If one of your open applications is B-Folders, this could create a security issue (possibly revealing sensitive data), even if the database is locked. For that reason, it is best to set the screen saver to “active” after a period of inactivity and show the logon screen on “resume.”
